According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the U.S. have prose literacy below the 6th-grade level. Therefore, the population we serve has ~58,518 adults who cannot read and comprehend simple instruction manuals.

2/3 of Students

As we know from, DoSomething.org 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on public assistance. A lack of literacy leads to higher health risks, greater unemployment, poverty and crime. Since illiteracy also tends to be tied to economic barriers, EDU-LINK is committed to eliminating that problem

65% of Fourth Graders

According to the National Center for Education Statistics 65% of fourth graders read at or below grade level: 34% below basic level and 31% below proficient level. Therefore, we can hypothesize that the area we serve has ~24,748 youth who read below 4th grade basic or proficient levels.

West Central Minnesota

EDU-LINK serves West Central Minnesota. According to, Public Use Microdata Area the population in 2019 was 146,442, with 24% under the age of 19, the median household income was $59,317 and 9.17% were in poverty.
